I have been thinking a lot about the article. I do agree with you Devin, that it is not immoral. I think a lot of it comes down to safety. India has a much lower medical safety level than the States does. I read another article about it and a lot of women are "hiring" surrogate mothers from India because they simply cannot afford the price of it in the US.
I suppose it comes down to a freedom of choice. How far people will go and to what risks they will take to have children.

I believe that Jane is correct when she says that it is the surrogate mothers decision whether or not to use her own body in which ever way she chooses. Although there are other people who will be affected by her decision including the unborn child. This child will one day learn that it was gestated in a rented body. Also the surrogate has two children of her own who will eventually find out that their mother has rented out her own body.... if this is legal how can we say that prostitution should be illegal. If renting out your body in one way is legal why is it not legal in other forms
I think that part of the problem with the perception of prostitution is that it is completely taboo. Though Fagan would puke on me for saying this, (and i dont neccessarily agree with prostitution) part of the issue is the stigma that is attached to the profession. The biggest moral issue I have is that it objectifies the women involved, and can be damaging both to the woman selling her body, and the gender itself. But as a profession, it is difficult to grapple with the fact that people need to make money, and some women are just going to do whatever it takes in order to make ends meet. The root of all this is poverty, which is the ultimate thing to be addressed, but at the same time, if prostitution is going to occur (and it will...most of the time) then governments might as well try to protect those involved and try to eliminate some of the surrounding controversy and stigmatization.
sorry...i know that was hard to follow and a bit of a rant. its just a tough subject to justify...or not justify.
