Prostitution

Since thursdays class discussion on Legalizing prostitution i have thought alot about if legalizing prostitution woudl really solve anything. I tryed to connect human rights to our discussion and realized that Prostitution is not just a violation of human rights for that women, but that womens child as well. I dont know the statistics but i bet a prostitutes kid is more likely to become one. THe home enviorment for the daughter of a prostitute cannot be good and i bet that they will be pressured to become a prostitute one day. Prostitution violates the daughters of prostitutes as well as prostitutes themselves.

I find your point very interesting, but a similar occupation is a stripper and thats legal...
this is probably a weird connection to make but what about parents who smoke-- do all of their children smoke? I feel it is a reach to say that children of prostitutes will become one or aspire to be one, if anyone finds statistical numbers on that... i would be very interested

perhaps what beau is saying is that it puts children at a potential risk, as does smoking and having an alcoholic parent, ect. but the point is why would the government be condemning something that puts several people at risk?

Just in terms of the issue itself, I feel like we need to look at where we are now. There is no end in sight, it causes such problems as human trafficking, and is mostly associated with drugs and other illegal activities. So what do we have left to do? I mean if this is not the solution (and I admit it is not ideal) then what ARE we going to do. Sometimes you (meaning the people) have to take risks in order to be progressive and move forward. Who knows what the results of legalizing prostitution would ACTUALLY be...but how can we definitively say that it is not the right answer if we have not tried and have no other prospective solutions in sight?

Well the thing is that we have it now, prostitution and all- even their kids, but if we legalized it then that would allow better health care, so less would get pregnant, and then if they did they would have higher pay so the child could be better supported. So by not legalizing it we are not helping those children or the prostitute themselves, we are just ignoring the problem and waiting for a better resolution that will not come.

Yes but i think the issue with legalizing prostitution is the message it sends, it would send a very powerful message to women. everywhere. It would be like our government saying prostituion is a good thing and that they agree with it. Which to me would be very disturbing.

What about the message keeping it illegal sends? It says to the men and women sex workers now that they are the dregs of society who deserve no more that to me kept on the outside of society and scorned by all. As legal sex practitioner, they would be accepted for what they do and respected as professionals. Not right away, but all good things take time I do not believe their children would be any more likely to follow their parents than would the children of engineers or lawyers or cops. With it being illegal, the children are much more likely to follow in their parents footsteps.

As Phoebe points out, we're doing a lot of speculating here. Has anyone found any research indicating the reasons why women become prostitutes? Is "thekid" Goodwin? I think it's interesting that you compare prostitutes to "engineers or lawyers or cops" in terms of following in parents' footsteps -- police work in particular is very often part of a family tradition.
