I just wanted to start a thread about this article:
I think that this system, though it has its flaws, is a really interesting solution to a number of problems. I do NOT find it immoral, it is a way to provide, as the article said, much needed extra income for such things as better housing and education. It also opens up more options for parents who cannot have their own children, so really I dont see much of a problem as long as it is done properly. If the paperwork is signed, the medical care is good, especially psycological for the mother, and everyone is ok with it then it could give some really great opportunities to a number of people. so basically im for it.

I know this is an awkward thing to compare it to, and i hate comparing things to movies but something the article said really reminded me of the movie juno.
It was about the attachment mothers will have or have to the child once it is born. In the movie the main characters mind set is that the baby isn't hers and it never was... it made me think about how much of a selfless act it is. and how much it helps someone you dont even know
The process does have flaws like devin said but when done correctly, i agree, the program makes sense
OK, so maybe in Juno it's a selfless act (or at least an expedient one), but in India it's a business decision. I think that's the interesting part of this discussion: it seems we're OK with women who "love to be pregnant" performing a "selfless act" for other women. But how comfortable are we with the idea of women selling babies to make a living?
up until now I haven't really thought about surrogacy in much detail. there are a few issues or uncertainties i have with it:
a. im my opinion it only qualifies as a business if the surrogate is being paid for her services. the family covering her medical expenses before, during and after the pregnancy is totally legit.
b. i also can't help but relate this to outsourcing. the similarities between tech support and birth is a little weird.
c. another concern I have is for an the health of an infant making the journey from India to home shortly after birth. Post partum depression is also a very risky thing for the surrogate
before i support this wholeheartedly i would definitely need to learn more about the process.
